NELSON STREET 4565
We are in the Docks area of Belfast and this is Nelson Street back in 1955.
Standing in the doorway of her house is a housewife and going by her pinnie
she has been working hard. But at the moment she's all smiles for the coalman
is delivering her a bag of coal from Henderson, I bet the coalman's back is
aching by the end of the day. What is interesting is that they have removed
the cobbles from half of the road for tarmac and yet what half needs repairing
already.
GREAT NORTHERN RAILWAY STATION
4536
Looking across Great Victoria Street to the Great Northern Railway Station
and to feel safe.lthough the sun is shining it must be very cold for everyone
has got coats on as the people are queued up and holding suitcases back in
1943 at 9.35am I wonder where they are going? It can't be to get to safety
for the bombing of Belfast stopped 2 years past. Perhaps factory work or just
going down South to relatives
LOWER NORTH STREET 4568
This is Lower North Street back in 1927, full of cars one lorry and one horse
and cart with a man selling goods off a hand cart next to the pavement. Further
on down on the left is the Alhambra Theatre.
NELSON STREET 4569
Well it's 1905 and here we are in a different part of Nelson Street looking
across the road at Nelson Street National School with some girls queued up
ready to go in to their class which is upstairs. Now the well-dressed girl
is wearing laced up boots. The little girl at the end of the row is wearing
boots most likely hand me downs while the other girls are all in their bare
feet. The lady on the right outside a business seems to be waiting for someone
could be other workers.

LOWER NORTH STREET 4571
Well here we are once again in Lower North Street back in 1912 at the other
end of the street. Thomas Campbell's Company that makes brushes like Yard
brushes, Sweeping brushes, Clothes brushes, Hair brushes, Shoe brushes and
even horse brushes. Outside the shop there are 6 boys. well dressed and they
are looking for honest work. Now behind them are 2 small boys most likely
lookig for work too, the difference is their clothes and bare feet. Next door
we have the Hustler Store which sells all kind of footwear. Further down the
street there is Carnichaels who makes hats & Caps and Barmichurels the
millinery. In the middle of the road are two ladies wearing shawls they would
be known locally as shawies in front of them are two ladies heading for the
blouse club. Old assembly rooms bottom left before Whig building.
LOWER NORTH STREET 4570
Here we are back in Lower North Street on the 9th July 1934 on a bright sunny
day. The building with the white pillars is a Woolworth 3d & 6d old money
Store and the goods were good valvue. On Woolworth's right is the Alhambra
Theatre where every night except Sunday they had stage acts of singing, dancing,
and acrobats, years later it became a cinema. The next business is Tylers
the shoe shop, at No.35 is a Charles Howell who's business is unknown along
with the shop newt door
The street was originally known as Goose Lane, marking it as a historic route
out of the city.

UPPER NORTH STREET 4573
This is Upper North Street on the 16th September, 1896 and these buildings
are due to be pulled down and new ones built in their place. As you can see
Gardeners Bakery and the shop next door have already left,Gardeners going
to Divis Street and the other shop to Gresham Street. The other two shops
must not have been told to vacate yet. Dr. Beck had a Chemist shop and he
was also a Surgeon. Next door was Craig & co which was a Clothing Factory
at No.109 and at No. 109A was A. Mitchell a Shop & Office fitter who also
was a Exbbition Show Case Maker. Now back then in 1896 you had to stand still
for about two minutes so the picture would be sharp. The white whispy mist
starting from A. Mitchell's to the lampost is because the lady is walking
past and not stopping. Another example is of the two boys past the lampost
one one of them has moved his head. Now the boy with his back to the camera
is in his bare feet.
LOWER NORTH STREET 4572
This is the far end of lower North street looking towards Royal Avenue and
the white building which was a bank. Such a busy street not only with pedestrians
but cars and lorries as well back in the 1930's and it's 12.45pm. Here on
the left at the corner is Clark's shoe shop, across the street at the top
of the building at the window on the left is a man and woman looking out.
GREAT NORTHERN RAILWAY 4574
It's 25 minutes to 10am in the morning here outside Great Northern Railway
and there must be a train due in. For you have the hauliers waiting to receive
goods and put goods on the train, then there are the coaches and side cars
hoping to take passengers to hotels and homes.
