This view of Antrim town in the 1980's was taken from Riverside and shows
part of High Street, Railway Street and Church Street. The shop on the left
sold kitchens then of course the Ulster bar, R Stewart the butchers and finally
a name that makes your mouth water and the stomach to rumble, Billy's Cafe,
chips to die for.

It's early morning on the 29th October 1922 and this is Antrim Castle with
smoke still coming out of it after the fire the during the night after a Ball.

Marching past the Shell station in Castle Street, Antrim is the A.B.D. Memorial
Pipe Band.
Leading them is Drum Major Dennis Young, then we have Dennis Young, David
Boyd, Matt McCullough, Victor Watts, Raymond O'Neill, Frankie Owen and John
Fletcher.
ANTRIM BADMINTON CLUB 1921
It's February 1966 and here we are in Magherafelt at the Mid Ulster Badminton
Championships.Representing Antrim Badminton Club and proudly holding the Cups
and Shields they won are Norman Rainey and Isobel Creighton. They were the
winners of the Mixed Doubles and Runners up in the Handicap, what puzzles
me is how an earth can Isobel be a Handicap!

It's Easter Monday 1914 and here we are at Antrim Castle on the front steps
we have a large group of well-known people who were specially invited to meet
" the Ulster leader Sir Edward Carson " when he inspected the Antrim
regiment of volunteers.

Can you imagine what it must have been like cutting the hedges in the Castle
grounds, it must have taken days, no Health & Safety back then. The long
pole sticking out from the top of the ladder is to stop the ladder from toppling
over. At the moment the man's name is unknown.

We are at the top of the town just outside No's 37-39 the offices of O'Rorke,
McDonald & Tweed the Solicitors in the early 30's.
Standing in front of a Charabanc which would take them round the North coast
and stopping off at Garron Towers for a break.

ANTRIM TECHNICAL SCHOOL 1950
Here we are in the grounds of Antrim Technical School with Headmaster John
Bell and one of his pupils handing over a cheque to a staff member of Muckamore
Abbey. The pupils had raised the money by doing a sponsored walk and were
the highest fund raiser.
Behind all the pupils at the back are some of the teachers on the left the
first one is Unknown, next is Mr John Davidson, then on the far right is Mr
Brownlee, Mr Andrew and Jim Francey. Finally the pupil second from the right
front row is Michael Craig.

Here the band is in Oriel Road in 1952 and as you can see there was
no proper footpath then.
Standing watching the band with his grandaughter Nadine Carson is Frank Taylor.
Leading the band is R Nicholl, in front in the row on the left is B.Cameron,
behind is T.Waring and G. Nicholl. Next on his own is D. Hamill. Next row
has H.Law, B.Woods and Mr.Baird. Next on his own is G.O'Neill. Final row has
F.Owens, Jimmy Steele and R. Steele.
In the background is and old single decker bus which used to belong to the
Ulster Transport Authority.
These
actual ladders can be seen at Clotworthy House in Antrim Castle Gardens but
5 steps each side have been cut off them including the central pole to make
them fit inside the building!

1942, arm in arm are Ann and Maud Agnew.

Seated outside their house just outside Dunadry in 1920 we have the Agnew
family.
On the left with her beautiful long ringlets is Maudie, mum (Rachel) is
next with Alex beside her. Tom is in front of Alex and Bessie his big sister
is next. Then dad William in his suit with his fob and watch chain showing.
Beside him in a velvet suit with a white collar is Willie, the dog is unknown.
Bessie later in life married a postman from Antrim. Now take a look at all
their shoes, what a shine, I wonder who spit and polished them?
COAL LORRY 1008
All ready at Dunadry in 1936 to set off to deliver the coal to their customers
we have leaning on the lorry Alex Agnew and behind him to give a hand is
Willie Agnew.

This is William Agnew in the overalls and beside him Alex Agnew outside
their garage at Dunadry in 1947. Behind then is one of the many vehicles
that they repaired and it belonged to D.Ross and Sons.Ltd. from Muckamore
who where general merchants delivering your groceries to your door. William
is leaning on an Austin seven which he had just bought for himself to fix
up.
ANTRIM CASTLE GROUNDS 3823
Out for a early morning stroll in Antrim Castle Grounds
these two ladies are enjoying the peace and the lovely surroundings. They
are just passing the Pump house which supplied water to the castle and was
once a temporary place for Lord Massereene's band called Massereene Brass
& Reed Band.
FAMILY OUTING 993
Out enjoying the sun in 1937 are some of the Agnew family
and on the left is Alex Agnew then his mother Rachel, his brother Willie
and then his father William. The babies are Ann and Maudie and they were
twins, in front are Jack and Rita. Take a look at the soles of the grandfather's
boots, they are covered in nails to make them last and were called Hob-nail
boots. On sure thing was that you could always hear your dad coming before
you saw him.
FLYING COALMAN 1046
This is Alex Agnew outside his house in Ballybentra Road, Dunadry in 1933
standing next to the lorry that he used to deliver coal with for John Kelly.
He must have not only been good at his job but also fast! as apparently
there was a poem about him called " The Flying Coalman".
